Tennessee Identification Card Online - Thanks to a federal mandate, drivers flock to licensing centers to get real IDs. The influx of people and technical problems created long lines, leaving many frustrated.
Adding to the frustration is that in order to get a real ID, residents have to provide more documents than is needed to get a Tennessee driver's license.

In 2005, Congress passed what became known as the Real ID Act, a recommendation of the 9/11 Commission. The law created a minimum set of security standards for states and prohibited federal agencies from accepting ID cards that did not meet those standards.

The law requires that anyone who wants to use a federal facility, such as a military base or nuclear power plant, or fly in a commercial airliner, must have an acceptable alternative, such as real identification or a U.S. passport.

If you plan to use the airport or go to a military base, you might want to consider it. However, if your passport is still valid, you can use it to fly on commercial flights.
In Tennessee, you can still use your regular driver's license for anything, including driving, voting, and buying alcohol. Real IDs are only required to access federal facilities.

Unlike renewing or purchasing a replacement driver's license, which can be done at a kiosk or online, you must visit a facility with the necessary documents to obtain a physical ID.
There are three types of documents you need: proof of citizenship or lawful presence, proof of a Social Security number, and proof of Tennessee residency.
If you have changed your name, including whether you are married or divorced, you will need to bring additional documents such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.
If you are already a resident with a Tennessee driver's license, you may visit any state facility that provides driver licensing services, including full-service or expedited service centers, or participating county clerk's offices.

If you have an out-of-state driver's license, you will need to go to a full-service facility to issue your driver's license.
From December, the government plans to start a mobile driver licensing facility that will issue physical identity cards. Locations for the mobile units have yet to be announced.
If you go to the participating county clerk's office to get your Class D Real ID, an additional $4 convenience fee will be charged.
October 2020 All states will be required to comply with the REAL ID Act by Day 1. After that date, states will continue to issue physical identification, but if you want to fly on a commercial airline or using other federal means, you will only be granted access if you have a valid ID or passport.

If you don't know if you have a real Tennessee-issued ID, look to the right of your ID. If you see a white star inside a yellow circle, you have a real ID.
